Warts

When the virus enters the skin, a small cut or wound, sometimes so small that it may be invisible to the naked eye will get infected. If the virus is not neutralized by the immune system, it triggers a proliferation of cells in a specific place. Exposure to the virus does not appear automatically, because the immune system reacts differently, and each may be more or less effective in combating this virus. Warts occur most often on the fingers or feet, but can also be found on the face, back or other body parts. They appear single or in mosaic (many small warts grouped together).

Warts Types

There are several kinds of warts. Their appearance varies depending on where they stand. The first two are the most common.

  • The common wart: wart that turns into a dome of hard flesh. In general, it appears alone. It can be formed on knees, elbows and feet, but more often on the hands. Rarely painful (except when it is located near the nail)
  • The plantar wart: As its name suggests, the plantar wart appears on the foot. It may go unnoticed for a while. If you look closely, you can still observe a rough nodule. The plantar wart can be painful because of the pressure exerted by the weight of the body. One may feel it is deep, but it remains in the epidermis, the outer layer of skin.
  • Other types: filiform warts (located on eyelids and around the mouth in children), flat warts (usually on the face, backs of hands and wrists), mosaic warts (on feet) and digitate warts (often on the scalp). Digitate warts result from stacking several warts, which form a sort of tiny cauliflower.
  • Genital warts are a particular case. They handle differently and may pose health risks (eg, women, genital warts increase the risk of cancer of the cervix).

  • The therapeutic abstention is known as spontaneous regression of warts in children. Immunity role is important here.
  • The localized application of salicylic vaseline can sometimes be effective. Indeed, salicylic acid is a keratolytic. It may dissolve the keratin, a main constituent of the epidermis, but is effective against warts

The dermatologist has several meansin in warts treatment or removing common warts (mechanical, thermal, electrical or chemical) at its disposal:

  • Cryotherapy (freezing) with liquid nitrogen after application, the wart whitens and hardens, surrounded by a small collar of frozen skin. The wart falls right off. This simple and effective technique requires specialized equipment and is sometimes painful. This is a often used tehnique in warts treatment
  • Electrocoagulation applied on the surface is particularly useful in cases of multiple warts. It requires an electrocautery and practice under local anesthesia.
  • The carbon dioxide laser can be indicated in treating warts.
  • Other methods are sometimes used when there are many warts.

Any atypical wart which is causing scratches or bleeding should be removed and examined by a pathologist. The treatment of warts is not systematic because the warts are benign tumors that usually regress spontaneously within a few years. The decision to treat warts is made between patient and doctor based on many factors like the location of the wart (a wart on the face is more troublesome ), the number of warts, changes in warts (are they becoming painful or are multiplying). In scientific studies concerning the treatment of warts, both treatments appear effective: the application of cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen or dry ice and the application of preparations containing salicylic acid. These two warts treatments are often associated. Their principle is the same strip and destroy the wart to the base of the wart, to try to remove all cells infected by HPV.

Also called condyloma or cockscomb, genital warts are lesions of the vulvo-anal or vaginal mucosa. Visible to the naked eye, they are not particularly pleasing and they are very contagious. Genital warts are caused by certain strains of HPV, a virus very common in the population. This virus can be easily contracted from the first sexual touching. Most of the time, HPV infection is completely asymptomatic, but when genital warts occur, they must be properly treated.

Warts are usually caused by viruses, there are over 60 different types of viruses called human papillomavirus, or HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) responsible for causing warts. Note that between the transmission of wart virus and the emergence of this infection (= incubation time) a period of several months is pass. In fact, the incubation time of a wart can vary from 1 to 20 months. Warts are very contagious, first by autocontamination, that is to say, by transmission of a wart in one hand to another, and secondly by the contamination to another person. Warts often occur after a physical or emotional shock or on nervous, hyper-emotional, often internalized, introverted process.
